Bella and the Witch brings fairy tale fun for all ages to the ESL Rochester Fringe Festival! Performances are at the SOTA Black Box Theatre on Saturday September 19 at 4 pm and Saturday September 26 at 12 noon. Tickets are $10 - $15, and are on sale at www.rochesterfringe.com and also available at the door.
Conceived and directed by Laurie MacFarlane, Bella and the Witch is a dance-theater piece inspired by the folktales of Baba Yaga and Vasilisa. When Bella’s mother sends her on an errand to her mysterious aunt’s house, adventure ensues, and Bella must use her wits, charm, and even some magic to vanquish the witch and return safely home.
Described as a “bizarre world of witches, moving trees, and stolen light” (City Magazine), Bella and the Witch is fast-paced, funny, and just a little bit scary!
Performers include Nanako Horikawa Mandrino as Bella, Alaina Olivieri as the Witch, and Can Afaraci, Marissa Engel and DJ McDairmant as the shape-shifting Chorus. This multidisciplinary piece features props by visual artist Martha Schermerhorn and an original score by Parker Callister.
